Single Mama Beauty Tip #2

by mssinglemama on May 24, 2008

Back by popular demand, Single Mama Beauty Tips!

One of the sexiest things about single moms (for the guys) and one of the most trying (for us) is the fact that we are on top of it … beauty wise. But it’s not easy – and there’s nothing worse than dragging a screaming toddler through the beauty section only to bring the product home and find out it sucks.

Talk about guilt. You’ve wasted time and money. So here’s another tip.

How to Get Gorgeous Hair – (for real).

The Challenge: After my pregnancy, my hair lost it’s luster and transformed from thick and curly to thin and flat. Enough to make even the strongest of single moms sob herself to sleep.

The Solution: Lush’s Cynthia Sylvia Stout shampoo, Lush’s American Cream conditioner and the FHI Black Turbo Hair Dryer.

Side Effects: Constant smelling and touching of hair, could be annoying to people around you.

If you haven’t discovered Lush yet, get to your nearest Macy’s pronto, or visit their website. Their products are all-natural, never tested on animals and most actually have expiration dates because the ingredients are so fresh. This shampoo and conditioner has seriously transformed my hair. First of all, it smells delicious FOR DAYS. And secondly, my hair is thick again and shiny again – just like it used to be! And after two years of thinking my hair was a lost cause, you can imagine why I’m so ecstatic about this. [Tip: only use it every other day because it's a bit heavy, you don't need much.]

The trial size is $8.75, start with that to make sure you love it because the larger bottles are more expensive. I’ve been using my trial sizes for over a month and they’re not even half way finished.

After realizing that hair is worth an investment (I had never spent more than $6.00 on shampoo before in my life) I decided to retire my old hair dryer for a brand new salon dryer (on the advice of my stylist). I had been showering at night just to avoid drying my hair because my old dryer left it frazzled, dry and frizzy. The FHI Black Turbo kicks ass. Find it here on Misikko, based in Philadelphia, the website offers a plethera of the latest and greatest hairstyling tools at a steep discount. For example, the FHI Turbo is normally $195.00 but it’s only $129.99 at Misikko. And they also have great deals on flat irons and ceramic flat irons

Anything else I should know about my hair care? Please enlighten me. Leave hair beauty tips or any others in the comment field.

“They Repeat.”

by mssinglemama on May 15, 2008

My best friend Mia mouthed this to me the other night while Benjamin and Sydney, her four year old daughter, were huddled beneath us eating cookies.

I had been talking about another adult, someone everyone in the room knows and has contact with frequently. Bad mommy. And naive mommy.

I may know a lot about being a dating single mom, but this mommy stuff – all of the rules – not so much. Mia is a few years ahead of me so she gives me pointers whenever she sees an “issue” cropping up. I welcome them and thank her profusely.

On the way to daycare this morning Benjamin started worming his way out of his car seat straps. He likes to do this because it pisses me off, I turn my head and he gets a mouth full of concerned shouts.

“Benjamin! Get your arms back in there! If you don’t – and we crash – you could go splat and die! Now put your arms back in there! Die, get it? Splat – dead.”

“Die! Die! Die! DIIIIIEEEEEEE!” shouts Benjamin. [click to continue…]

Mother’s Day = Pamper Time

by mssinglemama on May 11, 2008

No husband to pamper me + one adorable two year old son who has no concept of holidays = me, treating myself to a new ring, a new super cute hat and an even cuter new dress! (I know, I splurged. Oh well)

If you haven’t already – go treat yourself. Even if it’s just some new nail polish or a magazine!

And HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY my single mamas!

Did you pamper yourself today too? Were the kids good? So far Benjamin has been especially pleasant, minus dumping an entire bucket of toy dinosaurs out at the store and locking himself in the dressing room. That was fun.

A frog in a microwave.

by mssinglemama on May 7, 2008

Recently someone described me as a frog in a microwave. (I’ve been slammed with projects lately).

“What? What in the hell does that mean?” I ask, my eyes are probably bugging out of my head with stress.

“It’s like you’re in there, and if you’re in there much longer … you’ll explode.”

A few days ago I read a brochure about frogs dying off and rapidly nearing extinction. Amphibians, it said, are like canaries in a coal mine – they are among the first species affected by environmental stress…their decline serves as a warning to other species, including humans. Fabulous.

Are the frogs trying to tell me something? Am I nearing extinction from sleep deprivation and a heavy work load?

Warning: this is what happens to single moms who do not get enough sleep. We start thinking and writing about frogs. Sleep single parents – STOP reading this blog and go to sleep.

This frog is definitely going to pass out and wake up with her two-year-old prince. How old are your princesses and princes? How do you manage to keep up with them?
