Man things (and a video)

by mssinglemama on September 30, 2009

When I first started dating John Bear his dog drove me crazy.

Every time I would come over Murphy would jump on me, scratching my bare legs with his thick doggy claws and if he wasn’t jumping he was panting and staring at me, all the while emitting a subtle doggy smell. When I put two and two together and realized that John let Murphy sleep up in his bed with him I freaked out, “Gross! That’s just so disgusting.”

“Why? He’s just a dog. He doesn’t even shed and he’s hypo allergenic.”

“Hypo allergenic? A dog can be hypo allergenic? You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“He’s not that bad, you just have to get used to him. I promise. And you would never let a dog sleep in the bed with you?”

“No,” I snapped, “Never ever.”

That was five months ago. Now Murphy spends every single day at my place while John goes into his office. The little white fur ball follows me everywhere and we even cuddle – on couches, on beds, anywhere we can. Benjamin adores Murphy. The two wrestle, chase each other and even play hide and seek. I just can’t imagine our life without that damn dog and I am completely smitten.

One day we were sitting outside of the coffee shop and a few older ladies walked by (they always love Murphy).

“How long have you had him?” they asked. [click to continue…]

Man Park or Dog Park?

by mssinglemama on September 10, 2009

I would never compare men to dogs. Never.

Nope.

It’s just not my style.

I love my men.

Before I found John Bear many of you called me a man-hater. But now I’m a walking talking dog and man loving machine. Yesterday, inspired by your adventure stories, we hopped in the car and went to the dog park. Being a dog virgin I had no idea what to expect.

There were a lot of dogs. A lot of dogs. Running and jumping and slobbering everywhere.

DogPark

But to my surprise there were also a lot of men.

I couldn’t be sure about the dogs but the men, based on their ring fingers, all appeared to be single. And for the first time, in a really, really long time, I didn’t even think about dating a one of them. I’m so taken, it’s ridiculous. Instead I picked up the phone and called Mia, “You’ve got to get to the dog park – there are single men EVERY WHERE.” [click to continue…]

For My Single Mamas (a sexy contest)

by mssinglemama on August 21, 2009

When I started this blog I had one single mom friend, now I feel I have thousands.

I know many of you feel the same way having found my blog. Often many of you send me photos of yourselves and your little ones and my heart melts each time, especially today when I found this picture in my inbox of Robin and her son Reagan.

I wanted to share these words of her story of calling off her wedding to her abusive fiance:

It was the most stressful time of my life to the point where my hair was falling out like a cancer patient, but oddly enough, it was the most joyous phase of rediscovery and empowerment. I called off the wedding, struck out on my own … but then had to move abruptly to another state, leaving behind a life I carefully built as a young professional because my ex- took stalking to a new level of physical threats of violence. In many ways I lost everything — but in so many other ways I gained an entire world of new possibilities.

Robin is now living her dream career as a new media journalist for Zootoo Pet News, featured on the New York Post among others. Click here to see one of her newscasts and take a look at that beautiful necklace she’s wearing.

Robin’s comment reminds me of something I wrote in Ms. Single Mama Uncensored. Here’s an excerpt from the Rapunzel Complex:

The Trip Story: Part I

by mssinglemama on August 17, 2009

We got lost on this road, three times.

pennsylvania-poconos mountains road

Twice in the dark and once in the daylight when we were running on empty and desperately trying to find a gas station within 10 country miles. We finally did thanks to the kindness of our cabin host who happened to be on the road just as we were passing.

After we found gas we spotted signs for a fair.

wayne county fair pennsylvania

He won me a prize and I gushed like a school girl and I realized this was a first.

“No one has ever won you a prize at a fair before?” He asked while taking in the sight of his girlfriend giddy as hell and even jumping up and down a bit.  ”Geez… who you been dating?”   [click to continue…]

Trippin’, Part 1

by mssinglemama on August 11, 2009

There was a time, not too long ago actually, that I couldn’t imagine having mind-blowing good adult fun without alcohol, a night out and/or loud music involved. Long road trips, especially with new boyfriends, sent me into a packing frenzy which included over planning and filling my purse with all of the CDs and books I could find. Used in case of emergency to cure the often inevitable and uncomfortable bouts of silence, the music could dull the edge of a silent tension brought on by something either imagined or otherwise and the books could prevent me from fits of boredom.

It wasn’t until two hours in to my vacation with John Bear that it occurred to me that I had not only neglected to bring any music but that I’d also left behind my new copy of The Time Traveler’s Wife. Outside of our first Fiesta Mission, John and I had never spent more than three or four hours completely alone. Certain we’d have a great time I was still nervous about the nine hour car ride and our three night stay in a secluded cabin. Would we get sick of each other? Would we fight? Would we be bored? Would he start to smell funny after that much prolonged exposure?

The simple twist of fate that brought us together showed up again to throw the most challenging traveling scenarios a new couple can possibly face. But you’ll have to wait to hear the stories because we’re still technically on the road (more on why later). But I can tell you it’s been one crazy trip…

Until I can write more, you’ll have to settle with some clues of what we’ve been up to in my photo gallery (round one is going up tonight, hoping to get round two up tomorrow).
