For moms in college: wonder if you know about College Mom Magazine, http://www.collegemommagazine.com and The Guide to Colleges at http://www.katherinearnoldi.com Great info about rights, mom friendly colleges, cost of housing and childcare on college campuses, financial aid info and scholarship info. Both by Katherine Arnoldi, who wrote the graphic novel, The Amazing True Story of a Teenage Single Mom.
TIna 02.19.09 at 3:23 am: First of all, I want to say that I love your blog…it's like food for the soul. Your insight about single motherhood and dealing with the father of your child is invaluable. I also love the fact that you are not afraid to write about your vulnerabilities and the highs and lows of your circumstance. You do more good than you could possibly know.

The thing that I wanted to ask about is your 'reliable babysitter' that you mentioned in I Love Being a Single Mom. I have an 18 month old and have grappled with the fear of leaving her with a sitter (outside of daycare) since she was born. I'm just wondering if other single moms wrestle with this same issue…where are good places to find one (referrals are not an option), hourly pay or flat fee for the evening, etc.

I completely understand your sitter fear. I was very lucky and found an amazing one when Benjamin was first born and she stayed with us until he was about your daughter's age. Now I use a younger co-worker and she's awesome. I pay about $10 an hour, which I've heard is a high but paying more keeps them motivated to come back when you really need them (my theory anyway). I totally love this blog, it's inspired me to start a blog of my own. I am over 40 and have been a single Mama for many years now. I don't know how I made it through all those single years with 3 kids. But I am still single and wouldn't have it any other way now. Unless lighting strikes!
My son is starting college in the fall and it makes my heart melt when he says to his friends "don't you just love my Momma?" Anyway I was having a dreary day, just worrying about college tuition and such!!! Thanks soooo much…nice to get to know ya and that sweet little harmonica player…!

I am obviously no where near the dating part but it is nice to see people who have picked up the pieces and moved forward. It is great inspiration!! I am also working on starting up a blog (seperate from my family blog)so any advice you may have would be great!!: )

I was raised (along with 3 brothers) by my single mom and back in the 60s/70s nobody ever thought of her. She is a nurse and I know would have loved to keep up a blog like this. Yours is so well done, very nice.
