Mother’s Day Zen

by mssinglemama on May 8, 2009

When I read this post on Lost Bird Found I think I actually stopped breathing.

Sara Jensen designs the clothing and accessories you see on her site and keeps her lovely blog as a subtle compliment to that work. You’ll see that everything she does is brilliantly simple while also strangely unique.

With her permission I am re-publishing this post from a few days ago. Read it here now, find a special Mother’s Day offer at the end and leave a comment for one my Mother’s Day Zen prize packs.

4 years ago I lost her.

By Sara Jensen and her mother, Josephine Sterling Callisen.

A poem my mother wrote, before she passed away. We read this at her service.

All day I’ve fought back tears
Starting sudden, unannounced, commanding me to attention
At the strangest times.
I was wrapping something-it had been my mother’s–
nothing much
even tacky
a quick thought but true
as it had been then….
And I thought: there can’t be fusion without parting.
There can’t be that measured road of parenthood, of childhood
Without the ruts, the tearing of earth, the uprooted branches,
Starting from birth, the splitting almost in two
As if seeming to break
But before ripping to pieces, falling down a soft tunnel of forgetting
Into a new scene entirely, another beginning.
Still, there is this time when one hangs
Very small, solitary, surrounded by thin air,
A spider swinging in the darkness
Assaulted by memories of light.
I remember those times now, though they are usually shrouded
By the velvet darkness that has cushioned and buried my many falls
That has with iron hands helped me up again, to go to higher ground.
Now stripped and bare
Whipping into my eyes in the merciless light
Snapped there by my own heedless forward march.
And I know that they will pass for you as they did for me.
But: small comfort for you that I say this,
You suspended there, hanging between the darkness and the light.
I know that I can’t pull you up.
I know that you will find your own way through the night.
And I know that you will inch slowly, surely,
With much doubt and misgiving With much strength and grace.
In the morning your web
The one you thought you could not spin
The one I knew you would
Will remind me once again that there is no ending without beginning
That I will have no night that will not be eclipsed by your morning.

In honor of Mother’s Day, Sarah is offering all of you 10% off of tote bag. It’s $44.00 but hand-printed and rather large, so with the discount I think it makes for the perfect Mother’s Day present.

red-tote-bag

Find it here.

Use MAMA at check out for the 10% discount. For every tote sold Sarah also donates $1.00 to the Liz Logelin Foundation.

I’ll also be thinking of Matt and Maddy this Sunday. He says he’s doing better than ever but your support is always, always welcome. If you can’t donate to the Foundation at least spread the word across your various social networks and on Twitter.

It’s the reason Matt keeps going – doing what he’s doing – all of these TV appearances and other interviews. Even if it’s only for a second or a moment, Matt just wants to ease the pain of other widowed parents through Liz’s Foundation.

Happy Mother's Day!

It's going to be my first since separating from my husband, so it's going to be with mixed feelings. This week I wrote a blog post about being out with my two daughters shopping: http://mommasunshine.wordpress.com/2009/05/03/the…

He knows he's #1 in my heart and we'll always make time of mommie and me time….Next years mothers day will be the start of a new tradition…..

This is going to be my first Mother's Day, ever. As a single mom, it is certainly not going to be as I had always imagined it would be. But I know things are going to be okay, and I will get through this time of shadows.

Here's a Happy Mother's Day to all you other first time moms!

(By the way, I love your blog)

This will be my 3rd Mother's Day single and I'm sure it will be great. My 9 year old son always thinks of me and get's his Granddad to help him when needed. Just being with him makes every day Mother's Day. OK, mushy. But I do think I could use those books. I actually have the Dating Topics cards already though. Now I just need a chance to use them!

i couldnt make it through the poem without crying.

this is my first mother's day alone and i am having a hard time with it. but none of my mother's days have been very good, so i am looking forward to feeling happier about this time next year.

Fantastic poem.
My ex chose last May 16th to start this long journey, so this is a rough month for me (our anniversary also would have been on the 23rd). I am so thankful my own mother ingrained independence into my upbringing. I would not have had the fortitude to be thriving today without her insistence on that value. Thanks, Mom!

The poem was beautful!!

I understand what you mean about Mother's Day being weird. I feel very happy to be a mom but sad that I don't have another adult to share it with. Something to look forward to in the future, though!

Hope you have a wonderful Mother's Day with your little guy!! :)

Such a beautiful poem – my mum is still here but she has been very ill with Breast Cancer and the thought of being without her scares me more than I can say…..

We celebrate Mothers Day in March here in the UK – my boys being that bit older (15 & 10) made me breakfast in bed & got me a sweet little gift. They did leave the kitchen in a hideous state while making the breakfast – but oh well! I appreciated the efforts they made all the same :)

I hope all of you single mamas out there have a lovely day x

That was beautiful. I got the best gift this morning. I woke up to find 7yr old playing her room. "Oh mommy you can sleep more" Yeah, that was great. Plus the fact since Thursday she has been saying "Are you sure you can wait till Sunday for your gift?"
Happy Mothers Day!
