O’ the stores outside are frightful…

by mssinglemama on December 4, 2008

Shopping with Benjamin is like pulling teeth.

Shopping without Benjamin, as a nearly full-time single mom, is nearly impossible.

Stores in general just scare the living shit out of me. If you don’t believe me, read this.

So I’m doing 100% of my Christmas shopping online this year (I’m at least going to try my hardest).

Besides, now that he’s 2.9, sneaking things into the cart past Benjamin’s watchful little eyes is a lot tougher. On Monday night I hopped online to dive right into my Christmas shopping and check out what I found for Benjamin – a Melissa and Doug easel for $34.99 on Amazon, normally priced at $59.99.

I also bought the paper and paint kit for $20.58. The shipping was free and all of it landed on my doorstep on Wednesday afternoon!

Have I told you how much I love the internet lately?

Well, I do. Can’t imagine living without it. And have you discovered Etsy.com yet? All hand-made stuff, largely from mothers who stay at home. Unbelievable. I can not stop surfing that site.

Here’s a set of four mini tins for $10.00 from Magenta Designs. Aren’t these adorable? You could put cute, heartfelt notes inside and give them to your best friends. She also has the sweetest little magnets.

Have you found anything awesome online yet this season? Share the sites you love and the treasures you’ve found, it will save me some browsing.

I completely agree. I detest shopping. I got an Amazon Prime membership in 2006 when they were having their six days of Christmas deals (it was half-price). The membership gives you free two-day shipping. Once I realized they have groceries, toiletries, etc., I was hooked! And you thought books were enough. Now I think the mail lady at work hates me because I seriously get EVERYTHING from Amazon. LOL But really, who has time to go out and fight traffic and obnoxious people, a cranky kindergartner in tow? Except for shopping for things he wants and occasional grocery shopping trips together, I avoid stors.

Oh, I do ALL of my shopping online. NO WAY am I dealing with people and all of that mess. And like you, I am a huge Amazon fan. They ship quickly, prices rock and free shipping. Come on!

I love that easel! Shiloh would love it. But I just ordered her a toy piano, so that’s her big gift this year. I’m doing most of my shopping online also. It’s so hard to sneak gifts past a two year old and, like you, I don’t have much time without her. I’ve ordered several things from Target this year. They offer free shipping and they have cute toys. And movies and cds for my adult friends & family.

I do NOT do Christmas shopping at Christmas time, much less on Black Friday. I have bought everything for Sunrise throughout the year. Most of it coming from shopgoodwill.com where I used to work. I got a brand new Barbie laptop(it’s kids type thing..not a real one..lol) for 10.00, which I think is 30 in the store. Of course not everything is brand new on there..but sometimes you luck out!

As far as the easel goes…that is EXACTLY what I wanted to get her, but this year it is all smaller cheaper stuff.

FWIW…I do not like taking her shopping at all. It is just too stressful for me, because I am paranoid someone will take her…not to mention the melt down because she doesn’t want to stay in the cart.

Etsy is great….I have a shop on there but I’ve neglected it. I make cute little hair things for girls–and since I have boys, it’s my way of getting to be girly!! There are some amazing artists on there–and it’s addictive once you start surfing it.

I ventured into Lenox (a large urban mall) last wknd with my boys….CRAZINESS!!!! We will not be doing that again–I don’t know if it was b/c I was paranoid that someone would snatch one of them or just sooo many people–it was uncomfortable. Credit to my boys though–we were able to go into PB Kids and the big Pottery Barn–they were great. : )

Happy Shopping!! I can’t imagine shopping w/ a 3 year old either! My nephew is 3 & boy is he fast!

I’ve done roughly half of my shopping online, and loved the convenience of it. However, I’m now at the stage of the game where anything I want shipped is likely not to make it until after Xmas.

Just as an FYI – amazon does not impress me. Shipping charges are monstrous, and the wait times can be ridiculous.

I also hate shopping at the mall and after two recent stories of women being assalted at our local mall… even moreso! http://www.wdbj7.com/Global/story.asp?S=9459918&nav=menu368_2

I usually do most of the kids “stuff” in October just to spread it out but I still have to do a few more items and I am tempted to just get “American Express” gift cards for my brother and sister…

KitKat – SCARY.

Wyliekat lives in Canada, could be the poor shipping experiences. Anyone else out of the US had that problem with Amazon?

Lisa D – I SO want one of those too… I like the butterfly purse. Wow, thanks for sharing.

PT – awesome tip about Amazon Prime.

I’m also super surprised Dawn and LTP – that you’re scared your kids will get snatched, really? Thought never really dawns on me. More scared of purse thieves and the like. Sucks we have to feel scared in our own malls, you know?

Leah December 6, 2008 at 3:14 pm

Oh god. I know – I am so over the mall. The only thing I don’t like to do online is shop for clothes for me because I generally need to try stuff on. And then returns are a hassle.

If anyone here is into non-toxic, fair trade toys, I came across these additional resources:

http://www.atoygarden.com http://www.willowtreetoys.com/ http://www.treehollowtoys.com/ http://www.seasonsnaturaltoys.com http://www.mainetoys.com/

(This last one is actually a company started by a Mom in Boulder, CO)

First, it is entirely important that you know I adore you.

And I’m positive that if I looked at Etsy long enough, perhaps I would find something that would look good on my cell phone.

But I have to say…that my first thought when I saw those tins was that someone forgot to cut holes in those decorative, square toilet seat covers.

Last, I’d like to second PTLaw-Mom’s love of Amazon Prime.

Random –

You don’t like them? Really? I think they’re adorable… or thought they were – now I’m seeing toilet seat covers and I ordered them…

Now I know who I’ll send them to. : )

I ship amazon.ca as opposed to .com …. that makes a big difference!
